Qualifications
Duties of a Patrol Deputy
In addition to patrolling Massac County, a Deputy Sheriff is responsible for responding to calls for service in areas of the County and in the local towns and villages. Some of the more common calls for service a Patrol Deputy responds to are:
Domestic Disturbances, Traffic Crashes, Crimes Against Persons (battery, assault, etc.), Property Crimes (burglary, theft, damage, etc.), Neighborhood Problems & Assisting Motorists.
When not handling calls for service, Patrol Deputies are also responsible for enforcing traffic and criminal laws, DUI enforcement, drug interdiction, executing arrest warrants and serving civil process. The Patrol Division routinely assists local law enforcement officers and the State Police.

Qualifications
- Be at least 21 years of age at the time application is received by the Sheriff; and
- Be a United States citizen; and
- Be, a resident of Massac County, Illinois or become within 1 year from being appointed
- Hold a valid Illinois drivers license which has not been suspended or revoked, and maintain such as a condition of appointment; and
- Applicant must possess a valid FOID - Firearm Owner's Identification Card. (Can be applied for online at: www.ispfsb.com) (*After receiving an offer of employment)
- Not have a domestic violence criminal conviction nor a dishonorable discharge from military service or felony conviction; and
- Pass all interviews, background investigation, and other screening and testing required by this office.
- Have a High School Diploma or General Educational Development (GED) Certificate; or higher.
- NOTE: Meeting all of the foregoing qualifications is not a guarantee of employment as a Deputy Sheriff, but only entitles the applicant to placement upon a list of candidates eligible to be considered for appointment as a Deputy Sheriff. All Deputy Sheriff Appointments are made by the Sheriff, not by a Commission. All newly appointed Deputy Sheriff’s must serve a probationary period of 1 year from the date of appointment.
- Must complete a 14 week training course at an approved State facility, at the County's expense, or hold a valid Illinois Peace Officer's Certificate or equivalent.

Maintain interior and exterior security of a detention facility and persons contained therein, including physically conducting routine and random security checks of detainees/inmates and buildings.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS TO APPLY:

All appointments are made by the Sheriff. A one year probationary term applies. All applicants hired, who have not successfully completed the Basic Correctional Officer Training course, must complete a 5 week training course at an approved State facility, at the County's expense.

Tellecommunicator

Description
A Telecommunicator is responsible for answering 9-1-1 telephone lines, dispatching public safety personnel and equipment, and recording and relaying sensitive information that may involve life and death situations. As an employee of the 911 Communications Services Department, the Telecommunicator shall obey all policies, procedures, rules and regulations of the 911 Communications Services Department.
Illustrative Duties
• Takes 9-1-1, TDD, administrative and private line telephone calls.
• Communicates effectively with citizens and the personnel of the agencies with which we interact.
• Dispatches calls to appropriate police and/or fire units via radio and coordinates responding back-up units if necessary.
• Monitors radio frequencies, alarm board and NCIC computers for significant activities.
• Provides various notifications to public safety agencies, businesses and citizens, such as providing information on accident victims, arrested persons, alarm activation etc.
• Retrieves and disseminates a variety of information to police, fire and EMS personnel; such as warrants, stolen vehicles, complaint information, officer activity, fire activity, alarms, key holders, cross street information, etc.
• Accurately and effectively makes NCIC entries.
• Provides notifications, as needed, to utilities or other agencies
• Other duties as assigned.

• Must be able to speak and communicate clearly over telephones and radio.

• Must be able to work days, nights, weekends, and holidays.
• Must be able to work overtime to maintain proper staffing levels.
• Must be able to function individually and as a team member.
• Must have the ability to handle multiple tasks at one time and remain calm in a sometimes stressful environment
